Potassium fluoroaluminate (also known as potassium cryolite, potassium aluminum fluoride, or Potassium fluoroaluminate) exists in two main industrial forms, with distinct compositions and applications.

1. Most Common Industrial Product: Potassium Tetrafluoroaluminate (KAlF₄)

Main Component: Chemical Formula KAlF₄ (Potassium Tetrafluoroaluminate)
Molecular Weight: Approximately 142.07
Appearance: White or off-white powder
Typical Content: KAlF₄ > 83–90%, F content typically 46–54%
Melting Point: Approximately 550–575℃ (its low melting point is its most prominent characteristic)

Main Application Industries (Sorted by Usage from Highest to Lowest):

  1. Aluminum Brazing / Aluminum Flux (Largest Consumption Area, Accounting for Over 60%) A core active ingredient in non-corrosive/low-corrosive brazing fluxes used in automotive air conditioning, radiators, evaporators, condensers, heat exchangers, aluminum pipe fittings, and aluminum alloy brazing. Extensively used in the thermal management systems of modern new energy vehicles.
  2. Abrasives / Resin Grinding Wheels (Second Major Application) As a wear-resistant filler and flux, it improves the high-temperature performance of grinding wheels, lowers the sintering temperature, and improves self-sharpening properties. It is mainly used for machining difficult-to-grind materials such as stainless steel, titanium alloys, and cemented carbide.
  3. Secondary Aluminum Smelting / Recycled Aluminum Magnesium Removal As a flux, it removes magnesium from molten aluminum, improving the purity of recycled aluminum.
  4. Glass and Ceramic Industries As a flux, opacifier, and active filler, it lowers the firing temperature and improves glaze quality.
  5. Other: Small amounts are used in pesticides, electrolytic aluminum additives (experimental use by some companies), and metal surface treatment.

2. Another common form: Potassium hexafluoroaluminate (K₃AlF₆)

Main component: Chemical formula K₃AlF₆ (potassium hexafluoroaluminate)
Molecular weight: Approximately 258.27
Melting point: Approximately 1025℃ (relatively high)
Appearance: White crystalline powder

Main application industries:

  • Electrolytic aluminum industry (partially replaces or supplements cryolite Na₃AlF₆, adjusting the molecular ratio and lowering the temperature, but the amount used is far less than AlF₃)
  • Raw material for aluminum grain refiner production
  • Some high-purity ceramics and special glasses
